Skip Navigation

If your visitor is blind and using a screen reader like Jaws, he or she is forced to listen to the text for your navigation and banner being read over and over again on each page. You can ease the tedium by providing a “Skip Navigation” link to an anchor that leads to the content section of the page. Here's how it's done:

  1. Insert a shim or transparent gif at the top of your page. You can set the height and width dimensions very small. Give it an alt tag of “Skip Links.”
  2. Create an anchor on the page at the location where the content starts. Name it skip.
  3. Link the transparent gif to that spot.

That is it! You show consideration for your disabled visitor, and make your site a much more pleasant experience. See if you can locate the invisible (but screen readable) link on this page.
